Orange-bellied parrot -endangered
Image Code: Orange-bellied parrot -endangered MRW2377
Neophema chrysogaster Orange-bellied Parrots only breed in South West Tasmania, where they nest in eucalypts bordering on button grass moors. The entire population migrates over Bass Strait to spend the winter on the coast of south-eastern Australia. It is estimated less than 50 orange-bellied parrots remain in the wild throughout Australia and the number flying to south-west Tasmania to breed is continuing to decline.
It is listed as Critically Endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act 1999) (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources 2002)
